I was flipping through some photos (granted, there have been fewer of them lately) and I was realized that I haven't updated this blog in ages. Things change fast when kids are growing. I wondered, by not blogging, have I deprived you for enrichment? or saved your delicate sensibilities. We are this week putting up our fence, and while we love our neighbors and I will sure miss those sweet girl smiles, I so often get the question "WHAT are you doing?". Not to mention, I won't feel so self conscious bending over and weeding the garden. The garden, yes, the garden, but wait, that is a subject into itself. Back to topic. Where was I. Oh, yes, going through photos in which I asked the question "What WERE we doing?". Some of these things even seemed normal at the time. I shall endeavor to journal more of our weirdness. Should you wish to protect and preserve your delicate sensibilities, perhaps "Home and Garden" or "Cooking Light" would be a better choice for you.
Yesterday we had a great day. Our friends invited us to meet them at 25 mile landing, then take their boat up to Stehekin. The only way to get to Stehekin is by boat or sea plane, and the residents (all 100 or so of them) are rather resistant to modern life at we know it out here. They seem a little quirky, and I think I would love to live there. At least for a couple of years. It was only recently that they added telephone service and Internet (and if I am correct, there is only one phone).
The boat ride to Stehekin is amazing... towering hills on each side, with hieroglyphics (I'm guessing "Ethel + Bill is a more modern addition), mountain
sheep, perhaps a bear, and glaciers. Our ride was a might cold (57 and raining) but our undaunting perseverance paid off, because while it didn't get much warmer it at least stopped raining. (Photo here of Rheanna, I'm guessing the look on her face can be attributed to the fact that she was squished under cover in the prow with THREE brother...and their feet.)We had lunch at the lodge then rented bikes and biked the 3. something miles to Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Falls, 312 feet, is said to reflect the sunlight creating rainbows, so I would love to see it sometime when it was sunny.

On our way to the falls we visited the current and first school houses. The current school house is a log cabin and wasn't locked so we looked around. I'm pretty sure I would love this school! Kind of like going back in time 100 years or so. It seems that each graduating kid makes a quilt and they have really nice artwork and quilts on the walls. It was puzzling that we couldn't find any bathroom, but we eventually found them....cute little out houses in the woods (but perhaps there is one in the locked upstairs).
We really enjoyed our bike ride to the falls (Rheanna is like me, she has to stop and admire each wild flower.) We also stopped to watch these geese and their babies, cute! We stopped at the bakery on our way back and indulged ourselves..mmmm.

We grilled steak at a campsite on the way home accompanied with spinache and pasta salads, and fruit kabobs. Yum. The kids were so tired when we got home that they went right to bed!

'til next post,
ei
