Eggs to dye for

I was inspired by Family Fun magazine to dye some eggs with the kids. We were not thrilled with the dye we used since only the pink and purple really worked. That is not to say the blue, yellow, orange, and green didn't work. Those colors just permeated the shell and colored the egg, which makes for interesting potato salad and deviled eggs later. I have since found how to dye eggs using beets, yellow onion, turmeric, cabbage and the like, along with some alum.
We also tried to make patterns with vegetation. Here's how: First, sacrifice a pair of nylons or tights, cutting off the last 8 inches or so. Find some neat leaves (cilantro worked well). We also used blackberry and fern leaves. Place the leaf in the position you want on the egg, stick it in the nylons, pull back tightly, tie a knot and soak it. One thing we would do differently next time is to make sure we sopped up all excess dye before getting our egg out because it will smear your pretty leaf pattern.
We enjoyed our deviled eggs for a quick Sunday morning breakfast (Mom! said Caden) - we found a recipe that mixed in little bits of ham... very yummy.
Happy dying.
'til next post,

Sorry, for some reason I can't make paragraphs.
